Planning a Japan Advertising Pilot: Connect Online and Offline Activity

Design a measurable Japan advertising pilot with a defined audience, testable message, campaign budget and online-to-offline follow-up process.

A useful advertising pilot answers a specific question. It might test whether a customer segment responds to a product benefit or whether an event generates qualified follow-up conversations. Define that question before choosing media.

Select one decision to inform

Write a campaign hypothesis containing the audience, message, action and success criterion. For example, a B2B pilot might compare two value propositions by the quality of resulting meetings. This is an illustrative test design, not a performance benchmark.

Choose a primary result and supporting observations. Clicks and impressions can describe exposure, but the team should also define what counts as a relevant inquiry or customer action.

Connect the response journey

Map the steps from advertisement to landing page, inquiry and follow-up. For offline placements or events, use a clearly identifiable destination such as a dedicated landing page or QR code. Test that destination on the device a visitor is likely to use.

Agree how sales staff will record campaign origin and lead quality. If the follow-up process differs between channels, document that difference before comparing results.

Prepare claims and creative for review

Keep evidence for claims about performance, pricing and comparisons. Review translations in context, including qualifications that appear beside a claim. The Consumer Affairs Agency’s representation policy resources provide official background for the compliance review; sector-specific requirements may also need assessment.

Set a spending boundary

Include creative production, media, landing-page work and follow-up effort in the pilot scope. Define when to pause, change a message or extend the test. Do not change every variable at once and then attribute a result to one change.

Finish with a short decision memo: what was tested, what happened, what remains uncertain and what the next test should resolve.
