JAPAN MARKET ENTRY GUIDE

Japanese Website Localization: A Checklist Beyond Translation

Localize your website for a Japan launch by reviewing buyer questions, product language, proof, forms and the path from inquiry to response.

A localized website should help a prospective customer make a decision and take the next step. Use translation as part of a broader review of the offer, evidence and customer journey.

Start with buyer questions

Create a list of questions a new visitor must answer: what is being offered, who is it for, what problem does it solve and how can it be purchased or discussed? Place the answers where visitors need them rather than preserving the source website’s layout automatically.

Separate facts from promotional language. Have the product team verify specifications and limitations, then use a Japanese-language reviewer to assess clarity and terminology. Maintain a glossary so product names and key terms stay consistent across pages and campaigns.

Make evidence specific

Explain what a case study demonstrates and where the work took place. Do not imply Japanese customer experience when the example comes from another market. Use real credentials and permissions for testimonials, logos and performance claims.

For the regulatory context surrounding promotional representations, use the Consumer Affairs Agency’s representation policy resources as a starting point for an appropriate review.

Check the conversion path

Review forms, confirmation messages and follow-up emails together. Ask only for information the team will use. Clearly explain the next step and avoid promising a response time that no one is responsible for meeting.

Test on a small screen with long product names and realistic form inputs. Check navigation, line wrapping, field labels and visible error messages. A polished landing page is insufficient if the inquiry cannot be submitted.

Assign an owner after launch

Maintain a list of localized pages and the person responsible for updates. When a global product feature changes, identify the Japanese pages, downloadable materials and campaign claims that also need review.

A useful final test is to ask someone unfamiliar with the business to explain the offer and complete the intended task without assistance.
