JAPAN MARKET ENTRY GUIDE
Launching E-commerce in Japan: An Operational Readiness Checklist
Plan a Japan e-commerce launch around your offer, channel, fulfilment, customer service and order economics before spending on acquisition.
An e-commerce launch is ready when a customer can understand the offer, place an order, receive it and get help if something goes wrong. Treat the entire purchase journey as the product you are launching.
Select an initial assortment
Choose products that the team can explain and support consistently. Prepare Japanese product information, specifications and instructions where relevant. Identify any product-specific review needed before listing; a translated description is not evidence that a product is ready for sale.
Write down what would make a customer choose the offer over an alternative. Use that reasoning to guide the first product pages and campaign, rather than translating every item in the global catalogue at once.
Evaluate channel responsibilities
Compare your own storefront and potential marketplace channels against account requirements, fees, fulfilment options, customer-data access and operating workload. Verify the chosen platform’s current terms directly before committing resources.
Assign responsibility for inventory, delivery estimates, returns, refunds and customer inquiries. If several suppliers are involved, document the handoff between them.
Test a complete order journey
Before sending paid traffic, run test cases for a successful order, a failed payment, an address correction and a refund. Check what the customer sees and what the operations team receives. Confirm that help requests reach a monitored inbox.
For customer-facing disclosures and advertising, consult the Consumer Affairs Agency’s English mail-order sales guide and obtain advice on its application to your selling model.
Measure contribution, not only revenue
For the pilot, track revenue alongside product costs, channel charges, fulfilment, support and acquisition spending. State which costs are included in the calculation. Review the reasons behind returns and inquiries as well as their volume; those observations can reveal problems with the offer or product information.
