JAPAN MARKET ENTRY GUIDE

Japan Launch Project Management: Build a Plan Across Headquarters and Local Teams

Coordinate a Japan launch with clear workstream owners, dependencies, decision records and acceptance criteria across headquarters and local teams.

A cross-border launch can have capable suppliers and still lose time when no one owns the dependencies between them. Project management should connect commercial goals to a sequence of decisions and deliverables.

Define what launch means

Replace a single launch date with explicit readiness criteria. Examples include an approved offer, a working inquiry route, agreed customer support responsibilities and a tested fulfilment process. Adapt the criteria to the business; a software pilot and a physical-product launch need different checks.

Give each deliverable an owner and an acceptance condition. “Website complete” is vague. “Approved product pages published and inquiry submission tested” gives the team something observable to verify.

Track dependencies and decisions separately

A task list records work. A decision log records choices, their approvers and the reasons behind them. Maintain both. A supplier may be ready to work but unable to proceed until headquarters approves pricing or a product claim.

For every blocked task, identify the missing input and the person who can resolve it. Escalate when a decision is needed, with options and consequences, rather than reporting only that the schedule is late.

Keep one shared weekly view

Use a concise update covering completed outcomes, upcoming milestones, risks and decisions required. Include deadlines with a named time zone when teams work across borders.

Record changes in scope and their effect on cost or timing. Do not allow an informal request for an extra channel or product line to become an invisible commitment.

Close with an operating handover

Before project support ends, transfer supplier contacts, account access, reporting definitions and unresolved issues to the ongoing team. Confirm who owns each recurring activity.

JETRO’s business setup resources offer background on establishing a presence; the project plan should separately organize the commercial and operational work your chosen model requires.
